For a long time, advertising inside ChatGPT was a closed room. There were gatekeepers, managed-service contracts, and minimums that pushed budgets toward fifty thousand dollars before you could even start. That door just opened. ChatGPT now has a self-serve ad platform, and the barrier to entry effectively disappeared overnight.

This is a moment worth paying attention to, and not only because it is a new place to spend money. It is a signal about where buyer attention is moving, and how fast.

What changed

The short version: you no longer need a special relationship or an enterprise-sized commitment to run ads where people are already asking questions. Self-serve means you can set up, target, and launch on your own terms, the same way you would in a mature ad platform. The steep minimums that kept smaller and mid-sized advertisers out are gone.

When a platform removes its gatekeeping, it is telling you it wants volume. It wants more advertisers, more inventory, and more of the market treating it as a primary channel rather than an experiment.

What the ads actually look like

The format matters because ChatGPT is not a feed you scroll. It is a conversation. Ads that show up inside an answer have to feel like part of a helpful response, not an interruption pasted on top of one. That means the winners here will be the brands whose offer genuinely answers the question being asked, in the moment it is being asked.

That is a very different discipline from buying keywords and writing a headline. It rewards relevance and usefulness over noise.

Why this is really an AI visibility story

Here is the part most teams will miss. Paid placement in ChatGPT does not replace the need to be found organically inside AI answers. It sits on top of it. If the engine already understands your business, trusts your content, and can describe what you do, your paid presence compounds. If it cannot, you are paying to interrupt a conversation you are otherwise absent from.

The brands that win in AI advertising will be the ones that did the unglamorous work first: structured, machine-readable content that the engines can read, trust, and recommend on their own. Ads accelerate a presence that already exists. They do not manufacture one.

The takeaway for your business: Treat the ChatGPT ad platform as a reason to get your AI visibility house in order now, not later. Earn the organic presence first, then let paid amplify it. The businesses that are already readable and trusted by AI will get far more out of every advertising dollar than the ones starting from invisible.
